Formula 1 will make history at Silverstone today: for the very first time there will be a 'sprint' qualifying to determine the grid for Sunday's British Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton qualified first yesterday and starts today's Sprint race on pole.

The schedule for the new-look race weekend is as follows: Practice One is at 2pm on Friday followed by Qualifying (for Saturday's Sprint) at 6pm. Practice Two is at at 12pm on Saturday, before the very first F1 Sprint race at 4.30pm. Then it's lights out for the 2021 British Grand Prix at 3pm on Sunday.

The drivers will start the sprint race in the order they qualified on Friday. The 100km distance works as 17 laps of the 3.7-mile Silverstone circuit. The race will last 25-30 minutes, and should prove more exciting than the current knock-out format.

Points will be awarded for the top three finishers. 1st = 3 points, 2nd = 2 points, 3rd = 1 point. That means the maximum number of points on offer this weekend is 29, rather than the usual 26. A fact that won't be lost on Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Crash out or retire and you'll have to start at the back of the grid on Sunday.

To add to the thrills, Silverstone, the home of British motorsport, is set to host a roaring capacity crowd as part of a government research programme. Ticket holders will be asked for either proof of a negative lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of arrival at Silverstone or proof of full vaccination.

Can Verstappen make it four wins in four races to extend his lead in the driver's championship?

F1 fans in the UK can watch the entire weekend – including Sunday's race – live and for free on Channel 4. Follow our guide on how to watch a British Grand Prix live stream from anywhere in the world.
