Volunteers are the glue that holds our Sustainable Living Festival together. We are currently seeking volunteers for SLF 2013, which will be on 9 & 10 November. Volunteering on the Festival is a rewarding experience.
As this event continues to grow, we need a team of creative and enthusiastic volunteers to help us make it happen! If you are interested in being an event volunteer or taking on a specific task for next year’s festival – check out the roles below and let us know what you would like to help with!
Whether you are looking for work and want to build your resume; recently retired and keen to use your skills on a meaningful project; a new parent seeking mental stimulation from a small role; or you want to meet new people and work for a more sustainable Tasmania – we’d love to have you on the team!

We would like to expand the Festival Program in 2013 by holding sustainability events around Tasmania in the week prior to the weekend event at PW1 in Hobart. If you would like to coordinate an event in your area as part of the SLF program, we would love to work with you! The amount of time required for these positions would depend on the type of event or activity that you want to run. We will advise and support you, but these role require people who can self-manage and make things happen.
There are many components that make up the Festival Program. Each needs a champion to help drive it. These roles are for people who want to take a project and run with it. Time requirement varies, but all require a commitment to semi-regular volunteer hours in the lead-up to the Festival.
Festival Program Coordinators – Do people accuse you of knowing everyone? We need someone with lots of connections (or the willingness to contact people you don’t really know) to help populate our festival program with engaging presenters, inspiring speakers and dynamic performers.
Make It! Happen Coordinator – This year we want to hold an innovation competition as part of the Festival. Helping to develop the brief, recruit applicants, promote it, etc. We need a motivated person to drive this exciting project from June 2013.
PW1 Volunteer Coordinator - This person develops a roster for the weekend event and then recruits wonderful volunteers to fill it. You will also deliver a brief volunteer orientation and be the go to person for volunteers with questions over the weekend.
Kids Festival Coordinator – Families are an integral part of the festival and we want to ensure that our younger guest have a great time and learn a bit about sustainability. The Kids Coordinator will plan the kids space and recruit people to run kids activities at the event.
Festival Promotion Coordinator - We need help with getting the word out and getting people along to SLF 2013. Would you like to contribute to our liftout in the Sunday Tasmanian? Help us publicise specific components of the festival program to interested networks? Tweet and Facebook your heart out? Do some basic design tasks? Line up interviews and news coverage of the festival? If marketing and promotions is your thing, we would love to hear from you!
Design Showcase Coordinator – The design showcase has been a very popular component of the festival for the past 3 years. We are looking for someone to recruit artists and makers to contribute to the showcase and then curate their works at the Festival.
Make It! Activity Coordinator – This year’s theme is Make It! There are so many options of activities that would tie this theme into the Festival Program in innovative and engaging ways. If you have ideas or what to take one of ours and make it happen, please get in touch!
These roles are suited to people who prefer not to take on too much responsibility, but want to help with organising the Festival. Roles may be a couple of hours a week or just a couple of hours to complete a single task.
Admin Assistant – We need help with data entry and logistics management in the lead up to the Festival. If you are organised and know your way around simple spread sheets, we would love to hear from you.
Transport Assistant – In the week before the PW1 event and directly after, there are lots of items requiring collection and delivery to and from PW1. IF you have a large vehicle and are happy to help with transporting equipment in early November, please let us know!
Video Editor – we have lots of footage from last year’s Festival, but we need help to edit into shorter clips that can be used on our website and youtube channel to promote SLF 2013. Can you help?
Layout Master – We need help developing the layout plan for SLF 2013. Ideally this person can also be available on one or more of the bump-in days (6-8 Nov) to turn the plan into reality onsite.
Social Media Communicator – Do you spend lots of time on facebook and twitter? If so, we would love you help in communicating exciting developments via our SLT pages and helping SLF connect with a wider audience.
Come and be a part of the Sustainable Living team! We need team leaders and general volunteers to be on the Welcome Team, SLT Stall Team, Gopher, Festival Program Team (MCs, technology support, state manage, etc), Exhibitor Support Team and Clean up Crew. Whether you can spare the whole weekend or only a couple of hours - we need you!
